Kuan-yin, originally known as Avalokitesvara ("Lord"), is a highly revered incarnation of the Buddha who appeared in Chinese sacred texts around 400 A.D. Kuan-yin means "those who hear the cries of the world" and embodies the Buddha's compassion for those in need.
She is usually depicted as a young goddess, but has the power to take on any form necessary to fulfill her vow to appear in any form necessary to free beings from suffering. Here Kuan-yin is depicted holding a baby, symbolizing her role as Mother Goddess, mother of all people and protector of children.
